Buy Nothing Day

November
23

The Rev. Billy preaches against big-chain consumerism.

The reverand, a.k.a. William Talen, is the head of a mock church, the Church of Stop Shopping and today he was out with the Stop Shopping Gospel Choir.

For Black Friday, Talen was heading to Macy’s with a mass of striking elves to promote Buy Nothing Day.

As you can imagine, not everyone is a fan. A few months ago, he was in court in Manhattan, charged with harassing police officers in Union Square Park by reciting the First Amendment at them during a bicycle rally.

The prosecutor, Mary Weisgerber, called his behavior obnoxious.

His lawyer, Norman Siegel, asked the charge to be dismissed.

You can read more about Talen and his “church” here.

And he is the subject of a new documentary “What Would Jesus Buy?” that is playing at Cinema Village at 22 East 12th Street in New York City.

Funny, the reverend’s suit, microphone, and pompadour all look definitively store-bought.

    Maybe its a miracle?
